Intergovernmental Hendra Virus Taskforce

Biosecurity, health, environment and science authorities have formed a cross-border alliance to fight Hendra virus.

On 10 July 2011, the Queensland and New South Wales Premiers initiated the Intergovernmental Hendra Virus Taskforce, which, since its first meeting, has been expanded to include representatives from Victoria and the Australian Government.

The taskforce will discuss the current Hendra incidents to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach in responding to the disease.

Representatives on the taskforce include the respective heads of biosecurity agencies in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Government, chief veterinary officers, chief health officers, chief scientists and senior environmental representatives from Queensland and New South Wales, as well as the Australian Chief Veterinary Officer and head of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory CSIRO.

Working together, the taskforce will identify areas for further collaboration and undertake longer-term planning for managing the disease and its impacts.
